Govt. announces postings for 9 ASPs
The government on Tuesday announced postings for nine Assistant Superintendents of Police on their return from phase-II training at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy, Hyderabad.
The IPS officers and their place of posting is: P. Aravindhan, Tenkasi sub-division, Tirunelveli district; B. Gangadhar, Colachel sub-division, Kanyakumari district; Murali Rambha, Kovilpatti sub-division, Tuticorin district; P.S.C. Kalyan, Dharmapuri sub-division, Dharmapuri district; R.V. Varun Kumar, Tirupattur sub-division, Vellore district; Santosh Hadimani, Mayiladuthurai sub-division, Nagapattinam district; V. Aruna Bahuguna to become first woman chief of National Police Academy

National Police Academy to get its first woman chief National Police Academy, the Hyderabad-based alma mater for IPS officers in the country, could soon get a woman chief for the first time in its history. Aruna Bahuguna, a 1979-batch IPS officer, is tipped to be appointed as the new director of the 65-year-old institution, also known as the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (SVPNPA), which is tasked with the training of police leaders. Ms. Bahuguna (56), who belongs to the Andhra Pradesh cadre, is at present posted as the Special Director General in the country’s largest paramilitary force, CRPF, at its headquarters in the national capital. The orders for Ms. Bahuguna’s appointment as the new director of the academy would be issued soon, sources said. The officer, who has served in various positions with Andhra Pradesh police, also holds the distinction of being the first woman SDG in CRPF. She is the second-in-command of the 3 lakh strong force, after the DG. The post of NPA Director fell vacant after incumbent Subhas Goswami was last month appointed as the DG of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP). Reputed police officers such as Sankar Sen, Trinath Mishra and K. Vijay Kumar have earlier headed the NPA. Once appointed, Bahuguna would be the 28th boss of the academy. The high-level board of the NPA comprises senior civil servants, police officers and eminent educationists as its members and is headed by the Union Home Secretary.

Martyrs remembered

The City Police on Monday conducted a parade at the Police Recruitment School here to mark the occasion of Martyr’s Day to honour personnel who had laid down their lives in line of duty.

City Police Commissioner A.K. Vishwanathan; S. Davidson Devasirvatham, Inspector-General of Police, West Zone; and several senior police officials paid their respects at the memorial and observed two minutes silence. A contingent of 24 police personnel fired three shots in the air as a mark of respect.

Following this, the police commissioner read out the names of 576 police personnel who laid their lives while on duty. — with Davidson Devasirvatham.

 The entire nation rejoices the successful prosecution in one of the most sensational and long drawn fodder scam cases of Bihar, which finally ended up in conviction.

As erstwhile members of the police force, we know what are all the hurdles, the CBI would have faced in the course of the investigation and prosecution of the case. We know what amount of pressure would have been brought by the two most powerful erstwhile chief ministers Laloo Prasad and Jagannath Mishra, enjoying the support of the ruling alliance at the centre, on the officials handling the case. We are certain that they would have left no stone unturned to dilute the entire process and nullify the outcome.  

But, the CBI, overcoming all the impediments on its way, has taken the case to its logical end. It has accomplished a Herculean task. It is yet another feather in its cap. The entire nation salutes the premier investigating agency for its Himalayan achievement.

 We make an earnest appeal to the Director to convey  our wholehearted appreciation and sky high praise to one and all in the entire team which has done an extra ordinarily excellent national service. They are a role model to the entire police force  in the country. Their courage, dedication and devotion are outstanding. They deserve the highest possible honours.

Tamil Nadu cops get rewards for catching suspected terrorists (புத்தூரில் தீவிரவாதிகளை தீரத்துடன் போராடி கைது செய்த 20 போலீசாருக்கு தலா ரூ.5 லட்சம்-பதவி உயர்வு) Hours after withdrawing its earlier order setting aside the scheme of accelerated promotions, the State Government on Tuesday announced one-stage promotion to 20 police personnel, including Inspector S. Lakshmanan, who were part of a special operation in which terror suspects ‘Police’ Fakruddin, Panna Ismail and Bilal Malik were arrested. Mr. Lakshmanan who suffered grievous injuries in the operation was given a cash award of Rs. 15 lakh; all others, including officers, would get Rs. 5 lakh in appreciation of their good work in apprehending the suspects who remained elusive for long. Late on Monday, the Government issued an order (G.O (MS) 805) which said police personnel who performed acts of extraordinary bravery and valour when engaged in their efforts to apprehend and deal with hardcore criminals, terrorists and other anti-social elements should be suitably rewarded. Amending G.O (MS) 769 dated November 11, 2008, the government said “accelerated promotion may be awarded to those police personnel who have performed acts of extraordinary bravery and valour in achieving operational success”. A committee headed by the Chief Secretary and comprising Principal Secretary., Home, Principal Secretary, Personnel and Administrative Reforms, and Director-General of Police as members, was constituted to examine those eligible for accelerated promotion. It may be recalled that the concept of out-of-turn promotion kicked up a storm after the Government issued accelerated promotions to hundreds of Special Task Force (STF) personnel involved in the operation against dreaded forest brigand Veerappan in 2004. Some policemen went to the court challenging issues pertaining to fixation of seniority, pay and subsequent promotions. In this case, however, the Government has made a mention that the accelerated promotion would one-stage. In a statement, Ms. Jayalalithaa said a Special Investigation Division of the Crime Branch CID was formed to solve the murders of BJP State general secretary Auditor V. Ramesh in Salem and Hindu Munnani State secretary S. Vellaiyappan in Vellore in July this year. A cash award of Rs. 20 lakh was announced for those giving information leading to the arrest of the suspects Fakruddin, Malik, Ismail and Abubakkar Siddique who were also involved in the plot to blow up the convoy of senior BJP leader L.K. Advani in 2011. The special team comprising personnel of the Special Division of the State Intelligence and SID risked their lives in the operation in Chennai and Puttur where the three suspects were arrested. Appreciating the daring operation of the police, Ms. Jayalalithaa said the arrest of the suspects had averted major violence and attacks that they had planned. — with T Senthil Kumar and 2 others.
